Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation

Who are we?

The Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation (BBF) is a non-governmental non-profit organization working for nature conservation in Bulgaria and its neighbouring countries — especially in key regions as the Central Balkans, Pirin, Burgas Wetlands, Strandja Park, Osogovo and Belasitsa. For over 20 years, BBF has supported civil participation in managing natural resources and protected areas (PA), changing environmental legislation, presenting sustainable business models, enhancing organizational cooperation, raising public awareness on the issues of biodiversity and nature protection.

Our work

Individually and in partnerships, BBF has developed 15 Management Plans for PAs and 15 Action Plans for endangered species from the IUCN Red List. We have also prepared the documentation for the designation of 3 Natural Parks, 11 protected sites, and three new Ramsar sites.

Target habitats and associated species include: high mountain meadows, pastures and forests (Balkan Chamois, Lilium spec, European Brown Bear, Capercaillie, Three-toed Woodpecker); Beech forests (White-backed Woodpecker); Wetlands (Red-breasted goose, Dalmatian pelican); coastal lagoons (Avocet, Kentish Plover); Humid Meadows (Orchids); Dry grasslands (Marbled polecat, Orchids, Tortoises); sand dunes and carst complexes.

BBF’s main operational themes are Protected Areas and the Natura 2000 network, Green Belt and Biosphere reserves, Endangered Species, Sustainable Tourism, Environmental Educational, Public campaigns and coalitions. BBF has substantial experience in project management and mediation, with its trustworthy team encompassing expertise and passion shown by having led and managed over 20 national and trans-boundary projects with European/national/private donor funding.

Game on!

BBF has joined the global race against climate change while following/sticking to/working on/developing our mission to unite people with different perceptions for the preservation of Bulgarian nature and biodiversity. Underlying everything we do is a belief that accompplishing a sustainable future is only possible when our actions are based on finding solutions for nature and aiming for public awareness and local community engagement.

We strive to increase the recognition of the opportunities and benefits of protected areas while working for their long-term protection. Thus, within the Game on! project, BBF will be organizing wild camps, preparing Bulgarian Youth Ambassadors to represent their generation in their country, and organising national lobbying activities, among others.
